Fire Signage

The siting of fire signage should be consistent, providing instantly recognisable information for visitors and staff. These guidelines will help you understand the importance of fire signage and how Firecall Limited can work with you to promote fire safety in your establishment.

Main Entrances/Exits

Inside every main entrance to a building a new sign should be located on an adjacent wall, the positioning should be close to the fire extinguisher(s) if possible and positioned between 1.5m - 2m from ground level and 1.5 - 2.5m in from the door frame ensuring that when the doors are opened the sign is not obscured.

Under no circumstances should the signs be positioned on doors.
If it is possible, create a ‘Safety Area' to include the new sign, fire extinguishers, fire extinguisher information signs, first aid signs etc.

Call Points

Call points are positioned throughout buildings. They are most often adjacent to fire doors at exit points from a floor. A new sign should be positioned directly above the call point, failing that; its position should be as close as possible.

Lifts

A new sign should be positioned adjacent to lifts if there is not another easily visible sign in the area or if the lift does not already have a ‘do not use the lift in a fire' sign located inside or by the instrument panel.

Floors

Ensure that at least one sign is positioned on each floor level at the entrance / exit.
